A lot of people who have learned a second language wrongly believe that they can never learn other languages anymore. In fact, the reverse is factual – learning a language becomes easier. Learning your first language which is your native language or mother tongue is the hardest. or During the first stage of your life, you learn things through trial and error and you learn because of necessity which is a pretty good motivator. On the other hand, some individuals are born in an environment with multiple tongues but majority of them learn additional language by self-study later in life or by attending schools. So what are the factors in learning another language? Time is the biggest advantage if you will learn a language. Of course, learning a language differs from one individual to another. One can easily pick up foreign terms or words while one will find it difficult to learn a single word.

Goal-setting must be your first priority when you want to learn other language. Set your goals carefully. You might start to read the language and learn some basic conversation or few greetings. You don’t have to focus on listening and speaking skills. However, if that language is really important in your life such as your career, you have to focus on listening speaking skills. Your job might require you to speak a language that is not your mother tongue. You might want to work abroad where the languages are really strange to you. You might need more time to learn the language for you to seek employment. You can learn the language in many ways such as getting a tutor, watching a movie or television show that uses the language, listening to music and reading magazines and newspapers. Forget about heavy grammar but focus only on few conversation skills.

Learning a language is actually a lifetime process and nobody ever really finishes learning. Thus, when you start off to learn another language, you might not be studying your previous ones actively yet you are still studying them when you expose yourself to the usage of those languages. Bear in mind that you don’t substitute one language with another. If you think you need to go back to other language, it comes back rapidly since it is still there. You just have to maintain any language you have learned. According to experts, devote 15 minutes a day reading something, watch a TV show or movie once in a while, write an email message or two to your pen pals, listen to some music and so on.

Shortlist the language you want to focus on and start the hobby now that will last a lifetime. Write them with different goals. Set the goals and try to focus on the language that has higher priority. Remember that learning a language is not that hard but it takes perseverance and dedication. List the languages you want to learn that is beneficial for you now or in the near future and set your goals with timetable.

While verbal communication is important and knowing how to communicate is key to a successful business career is important, another aspect of languages that people sometime forget is the nonverbal languages or body languages. In business people are not only analyzing how you are speaking or presenting, but also the way that you carry yourself. Here are some ways that body language can be interpreted so you know what to do and not to do.

Starting at the top how you are holding your head can say a lot. Tilting your head slightly while you are listening can show that you are interested in something. The occasional not also while you are listening can portray a positive message and indicate that you are listening. However you have to be careful because too much nodding implies that you have lost interest or that you are not really listening. You can also tell what your audience is by their body language if you are the one who is speaking. Touching or a slight rub of the nose may indicate that they are rejecting your idea. If their hand is on their chin it may mean that they are considering your idea. The saying goes that the eyes are the windows to the soul, and in business it may show how confident you are. A person who fails to look someone in the eye is seek as having a lack of confidence so you should make sure that when you walk into that boardroom to make your presentation you look them in the eye.

When making a business presentation it is also important how you hold your upper body. Standing with your arms crossed while you speak is a visible barrier that you are creating between yourself and your listeners, however if you stand with your arm open and your palm up it shows that you are approachable and willing to communicate. Try not to fiddle with items or tap your fingers while you are speaking. Even though you may be nervous about speaking in front of your boss these types of body languages can project your nerves and frustration.

How you stand is also a voice of body language. The normal position of feet shoulder width apart is normal, and the farther your feet are out from that position the more dominance you project which may not be the tone that you are trying to set. Remember that no matter how nervous you are you need to project a calm relaxed exterior that also appears confident in your presentation.

It is estimated that only ten percent of what people receive is that actual words that you speak. The remaining part is taken from forty percent tone and speed of voice so it is important that you speak clearly and project your voice, and the remaining fifty percent is received in body languages. Use body language to project confidence in yourself and the subject that you are presenting on so that others will believe in it as well. So even if you are so nervous you don’t know how you will make it through your presentation you can manipulate your body language to project a confidence and no one may ever know how really terrified you were.
